National sweepstakes will also raise up to $35,000 for The Salvation Army

Austin, TX (May, 2016) – Entenmann’s® Bakery, a division of Bimbo Bakeries USA (BBU), is again partnering with The Salvation Army for National Donut Day, celebrated this year on Friday, June 3, 2016. In the Austin area, to commemorate the historical day, the day’s events will include Entenmann’s® donut distribution at the Austin Veteran’s Administration clinic as well as Williamson & Travis County police, EMS and fire departments.

The Salvation Army founded National Donut Day in 1938 to pay tribute to “Donut Lassies”, female volunteers, who provided writing supplies, clothes-mending, home-cooked meals, and of course, donuts, for soldiers on the front lines in WWI. For the 6th consecutive year, Entenmann’s® will be joining The Salvation Army to honor this day with co-branded Entenmann’s® Bakery boxes, including the company’s roll-out of the new Rich Frosted Party Sprinkled Donut. In addition, Entenmann’s® Bakery will donate $1 to The Salvation Army for each ‘Win Free Donuts for a Year’ Facebook Sweepstakes entry received during the campaign, up to $35,000. In addition, a local social media contest invites people to share their Donut Day stories in a public post using #NationalDonutDay and tagging Salvation Army Austin on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram to be entered to win one of three Donut Day mugs.

“With the support of Entenmann’s®, we are glad for the opportunity to share National Donut Day with our community. For The Salvation Army, the donut is a symbol of our service, a legacy we continue to uphold as we have done for 128 years in Travis & Williamson Counties,” said Area Commander, Lt. Colonel Henry Gonzalez.

We are honored to have The Salvation Army as our National Donut Day partner for the 6th consecutive year, and proud to be a part of their efforts to help families around the world by raising funds through our National Donut Day campaign,” said Maureen Sticco, Director of Entenmann’s® Marketing Services. “We are also looking forward to the ‘Win Free Donuts for a Year’ Facebook sweepstakes, reaching Entenmann’s® fans everywhere so they can be part of our National Donut Day celebration and have a chance to win their own parties at home.”

National Donut Day’s Freshly Baked History:

The holiday, held annually on the first Friday of June, was established by The Salvation Army in 1938 in Chicago to honor the “Donut Lassies,” who served these treats to soldiers during World War I, and to help raise needed funds during the Great Depression.

The donuts became synonymous with The Salvation Army, as well as the American soldiers who were returning home with the nickname, “doughboys.” This significant occasion established the donut as a long-standing symbol of the services The Salvation Army continues to provide. Today, The Salvation Army continues to provide meals, including donuts, and numerous other services to clients who visit The Salvation Army programs daily.

“We are grateful for loyal partners like Entenmann’s®, who have proven to be exceptional in their efforts to support our mission of goodwill. We look forward to making the 2016 National Donut Day an unforgettable occasion,” said Colonel Ron Busroe, National Community Relations and Development Secretary for The Salvation Army.
