Back to School Drive 2024- Preparing students for a successful school year

Jun 21, 2024 | by Maggie Mullen

Another year, another Back-to-School Drive! As inflation causes major increases in prices of items within a normal school list, some families have begun to feel stressed due to financial setbacks. According to the 2023 Deloitte Back to School (BTS) survey, BTS is the second largest spending event for families. With inflation increasing prices 23.7% over the past two years, families are overwhelmed by the financial burden.

The Austin Shelter for Women and Children and The Rathgeber Center for families are two Travis County family shelters operated by The Salvation Army. These facilities offer vital resources to families striving to break free from crisis, guiding them toward a path of stability, not just for themselves but also their children. Each summer, a Back-to-School drive is organized to ensure that each child living at our shelters can start their school year with the same preparedness and confidence as any other child. Our community is essential in gathering the supplies needed to accomplish this mission.

“The kids are actually excited to go back to school with all of their new school supplies and backpack,” Autumn Landau, The Rathgeber Center Residential Service Director, said, “When they receive their backpack, they love posing with it on.” The simple gift of school supplies can bolster students’ self-esteem as they embark on their path toward a successful future.
