The Salvation Army Rathgeber Center for Families

A low barrier, housing-focused emergency shelter serving families with children experiencing homelessness. This is the largest facility of its kind in Central Texas, allowing fathers, mothers, and guardians to stay with their children.

Case management, rapid rehousing services, employment assistance, computer labs, and child/family therapy are provided on site.

The RC opened in February of 2020 and was built with privately raised Salvation Army Capital Campaign dollars on land donated by Dick and Sara Rathgeber. The Rathgeber Center is comprised of two separate "phases." Phase I serves as a case-managed emergency shelter with 120 beds in 42 private rooms; the average family stay is 4-6 months. Phase II has 92 beds in 23 extended-stay suites where families with higher barriers can stay, find success, and eventually move into permanent housing.

Lead Partner

The Salvation Army of Austin is proud to have partnered with the Austin Diaper Bank since 2015 to receive diapers, adult supplies, period products and wipes for the families we serve and are very grateful for the services that they continue to provide to the shelter every year.
