FY2021 ANNUAL REPORT – THE RATHGEBER CENTER IS UNIQUE AND NECESSARY FOR FAMILIES IN CRISIS
The Rathgeber Center for Families is the newest of our three shelters in Austin. With a focus on family units that includes fathers, mothers, guardians, and children, the center provides not only a haven, but also a variety of services to ensure these family units can stay together as they regain stability.
“Our shelter offers a variety of resources to help our clients make successful transitions,” said Shelter Director Carrie Green. “Everyone here is case managed and has access to skills training, employment assistance, a childcare center, and computer learning centers with certified teachers on site.” Families in Phase II also have their own private living space with a connected bathroom and a kitchen.
In 2021, the center served 419 adults and children. Eighty-four percent of families exiting The Rathgeber Center moved to safe housing.
One of these families includes Luis, a single father who found himself with little income and nowhere to live after escaping his abusive father’s home. With nowhere else to turn, Luis and his son came to The Rathgeber Center where they were given the resources needed to move into a new apartment and land a great job. The Rathgeber Center, said Luis, “is so much more than a roof over your head.”
