The Salvation Army joins forces with Walmart to “Stuff the Bus” for Kids in Need

Aug 6, 2020

Austin, TX (August 6, 2020) – Walmart and The Salvation Army are collaborating to provide new school supplies to local children in need during the “Stuff the Box” event from August 7-9. When shoppers visit the Walmart stores listed below this weekend, they can purchase and drop off requested items at The Salvation Army collection bins at the front of each store.

• Austin: 710 E Ben White
• Sunset Valley: 5017 E HWY 290
• Cedar Park: 2801 E. Whitestone

In light of COVID-19, The Salvation Army has adapted its services to ensure that children in every community can continue receiving the educational support they deserve. This year, the “Stuff the Box” campaign is one of more than 4,500 similar school supply drives taking place at Walmart stores across the country.

“We are reaching out to the community for help to provide school supplies to the children who are living in our shelters who are not able to afford those items critical to success in school,” said Major Lewis Reckline, Austin Area Commander for The Salvation Army. “We anticipate the number of those in need will increase significantly this year due to the pandemic and struggling economy.”

Those wanting to contribute can also shop the Walmart and Amazon back to school supply list from our website by visiting www.salvationarmyaustin.org/get-involved/back-to-school-drive/. All supplies will be delivered directly to our office and will remain in Travis and Williamson counties to be distributed to local children, including the more than 50 students living at the Austin Shelter for Women and Children and The Rathgeber Center for Families.

About The Salvation Army
The Salvation Army has been supporting those in need for more than 131 years in the Austin area. The Salvation Army is Central Texas’ largest provider of emergency shelter. We manage the Austin Shelter for Women and Children, The Rathgeber Center for Families, and the Downtown Shelter and Social Services Center. In 2019, we served more than 2,900 men, women, and children, provided over 118,000 bed nights, and had over 80 percent of clients successfully exit our programs. Locally thousands of people receive assistance from The Salvation Army each year through services that include providing relief for disaster victims, rehabilitation for the addicted, clothing and shelter to those experiencing homelessness, and case management to help people move from crisis to stability.
